Job Summary

The Mobile Breakdown Technician is responsible for attending roadside or customer-site vehicle breakdowns, diagnosing faults, and carrying out repairs to restore vehicles to safe operating condition. The role involves working independently in a mobile service vehicle, providing rapid response support to drivers and customers while ensuring all work meets safety, legal, and manufacturer standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend roadside and on-site vehicle breakdowns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults on vans, heavy and light commercial vehicles.
  • Carry out emergency repairs to allow vehicles to continue safely or be transported for further repair if required.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and technical manuals to identify issues quickly and accurately.
  • Repair or replace components such as batteries, starter motors, alternators, brakes, fuel systems, and electrical systems.
  • Conduct basic servicing and minor repairs where appropriate during breakdown response.
  • Provide clear updates to drivers, customers, or control teams regarding repair status and outcomes.
  • Complete job sheets, inspection reports, and service documentation accurately using company systems.
  • Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations and roadworthiness standards.
  • Maintain the mobile service vehicle, tools, and equipment in a safe and organised condition.
  • Deliver high standards of customer service and professionalism while representing the company.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience as a vehicle technician, roadside technician, or breakdown mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, mechanical systems, and auto electrics.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair faults independently in a mobile roadside environment.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills when dealing with customers and drivers.
  • Familiarity with modern vehicle diagnostic software and tools.

Qualifications

Level 3 qualification in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.

Valid UK driving licence (essential).

Additional roadside assistance or recovery training is advantageous.

Working Conditions

Work is carried out on the roadside, at customer premises, or at company depots.

May involve shift work, weekends, and on-call breakdown rota.

Requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Physical work including lifting equipment and working in confined spaces.

Covering Sheffield & surround area.
